the best wood ive found to use is green oak, its just easier to work with than most woods as well as being stronger too, plus it goes a lovely pale honey colour with a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil!snapdragon wrote:Lovely jobwhat wood are you using for them hyperion? I bought one to use as a template (for weaving but I'll be trying netting too) I think it's Balsa - and I was wondering whether maple or horse chestnut would work.

id go for the maple then!snapdragon wrote:hyperion wrote:....i dont know about maple as ive never used it but i think horse chesnut would be too brittle and might split along the grain! Thanks for that info - just that those are what I have growing and need a top trim so they avoid the overhead powerlines.

Looks exactly like mine - Opinel, made in France I think, general use penknife. It locks open with the little ring device at the top of the handle, which is wood, very comfortable knife to use.Green Aura wrote:I know absolutely nothing about all this - I know I'm squeamish - but I do have that knife you show in the middle.
It was my Dads. Can you tell me anything about it? I don't even know what it's for - but it's hellish sharp even now (he died 14 years ago).
