From Preston Lancs, hello again

Post: # 255805Post romie »

Hi guys

I've been a member here for a few years, but I've hardly been on for the last 2 years since meeting the hubster and all that 'that' has entailed

We are in many ways the luckiest people alive (we think) we met 3 years ago and had the same outlook and dreams  we were planning on emigrating to Canada and getting land and living the good life, due to hubsters health we can no longer do that, but things have turned out great.
Due to his health we live month by month, we couldn't believe our luck when late last year we saw a small cottage with a bit of land, chickens, pond, fruit trees, stream etc etc, we never imagined we could find something like it in our price range in a location where we can both continue with our current jobs, close enough to his hospital and close to our families.
So we've overstretched and bought it, it comes with many problems and many many learning curves, I'm trying to create a garden/ envirnment where every plant is useful be it for eating, herbal, burning, animal fodder etc...current and ongoing...

I've patched the greenhouse together with mirrors, perspex and old cut up conservatory roof
We've so far lost 3 chickens over the hedge and 1 to a dog :pale:
But on the upside the chooks have become very healthy and happy with lots to do since I moved in, plenty of interest
I crochet, paint, sew (badly) do homebrew and make anything edible the hubster is having a go at metal and woodwork
The house is black inside with mould and is slightly falling into the stream, boiler is bust and fire doesnt work :angryfire:
The rubbish and junk left behind by the previous owner is unbelievable but i'm finding amazing uses for it
My first peas are in the ground, hedges are cut back (in Jan) new hedges planted and some seedlings sown
We are building our first huglekulter bed and have found excellent clay so hopefully an earth oven will get built

Goddammit we're happy and we're living everyday as fully as possible, planning slowly and hopefully for a future

I saw a quote today which summed it up although it extends to more than gardening...
"Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow"

Anyway, rambled a bit, but HI
Seize the day, give those you love a big squeeze, time is precious

Hi there and welcome  That as a lovely and very inspiring post - lots more like that please!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Hi and welcome Romie.

Where in Preston are you ? I am just outside in Longridge, a lovely spot, altho significantly more modest than the project you have undertaken. Good luck with it, sounds about where I was a couple of years ago [minus the hubbie part !]

Thanks guys, I didn't mean to ramble so much, it just spilled out oops

I'm ready to post away, got a lot of questions I finally feel able to ask, picking up a lot of tips (especially repairing the greenhouse with clingfilm for a while!) and I've stopped worrying about my rhubarb bed (which doubles as our girlie dogs favorite spot)

Sarahkeast Hi there, we are in Whitestake, tiny cottage, 1/3 Acre (hopefully a little more one day) BIG plans, nice to know I'm not the only woman in the area trying to do my bit, it often feels like it, my friends truly think I'm bonkers.
I walked into work today after 9 days off, I work in a modern computerised slick looking office with city dwellers, found out my new name is Rooster Rosie and I was expected to arrive with a chicken under 1 arm, crochet under the other balancing 2 lots of veg soup somewhere! I'm getting myself a reputation lol

Ha, I hear you on the 'weird at work' thing, not only do I grow/save stuff, I also run a lot, eat salad and dont watch soap operas !

If you are ever on this side of town let me know, would be fun to catch up and check out each others' dream pads !

Funny you say that, I'm doing the London marathon next month and I don't really watch TV never mind soaps (hate them)
I'm not a great runner, still starting out really and had a lot of injuries (back and foot)

We should meet up at some time, I work long hours and have sporadic days off, but I'm up for it, it'll be a few weeks mind you!
