Hello from the far north.....

Post: # 6829Post midgemagnet »

Greetings from sunny Caithness (about 5 hrs drive north of Aberdeen),

Good website, now becoming a regular source of advice...

Lived in the north for over two years, lived in a wee house in Berkshire, now have a rather larger place in 4 acres up here.

Um...now acquired chickens, mad jack russell, old Fergie Tractor and implements.

Still full of daft questions but learning! :geek:

Started to grow some veg this year with some success (turnips/potatoes/onions) but we are all turnipped out now. Planted rhubarb, raspberry canes, gooseberry bushes (got enough for 1 pie this year!), and about 150 trees of various types.

Had an amazing crop of docks as well but they are slowly being beaten

Next year will be scaling up the veg production and will have more room for storage.

The climate and growing season are rather restrictive sometimes!

For the future? Well continuing to improve drainage, make a garden, more fencing, maybe a polytunnel, maybe a small wind turbine eventually
(but seems a lot of money at the moment!)

I do have a day job which gets in the way of progress sometimes! But a necessary evil I suppose.

Best wishes!

Mick

Hi Mick, your new life sounds great so far! I guess from your 'site name' you have been attacked by the dastardly midges, aren't they such a bind?! You say you lived in the north for 2 years, but i'm guessing you mean north england? I am in Stirling, central Scotland, I would say a polytunnel would be a good idea, the growing season sure is shorter in scotland, and especially where you are.
Where you are it'll be nice to have the fresh air, the space and the lack of people though i'll bet!!?
Pam.

P.S. Meant to say I also have mad jack russell called Jim. wouldn't be without him, apart from being such a love, he's a brilliant ratter.

Hi Midgemagnet

Glad to hear there's somebody else eaten alive... They love me, too. The midges, I'm talking about of course!

Your life up there sounds just like what I'd like to have. 4 acres would do me fine. And a little old grey Fergie... That brings back memories! I still prefer one of them to those damn huge things that do everything themselves, except that you need a ladder to get into them, and they don't fit into any shed!

Now docks: The best way to beat them is by using livestock. Goats will eat them, and pigs will dig up their roots. So maybe you should think of extending your livestock?

Hope you stay with the site, I'm glad there's now somebody else from further north than myself

Ina
