We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.
Hi all, been browsing the site for a while and thought I'd pop in to say hello. Like gardening, but have only managed a few tomatos and courgettes over the years along with all those wasteful flowers - our house is on an island between a river and a mill cut - and is surrounded by trees on the banks (mostly Ash I think). It is a beautiful piece of paradise but virtually impossible to garden with all those tree roots and the floods! "Excuses, excuses" I hear you cry. We have a small person called Josh (who was 2 on Christmas day), four dogs and three cats, tropical and coldwater fish (remnants of a hobby).
Planning on doing a lot of gardening with Josh this year and helping a friend to plan her garden too. I would also like to do an RHS course but I'll have to save up for that! I work in a vets (valuable discount!!).
Hello there Tigerhair and welcome. It certainly does sound like a little corner of paradise. Is it somewhere in the UK? or further afield.
My parents and my grandparents would both let me help them garden when I was a child. I think it is an amazing passtime to share and it really good to get kids interested from as early as possible.
Hi Andy
Thanks - and congrats on the great site. I have been a fan of the wonderful John Seymour for years (and want the updated version of his bible)... We live in Derbyshire - it's very beautiful. The annoying thing about the garden is worse because the soil here is SO good! Practically anything grows (esp. the weeds!) and it's moist too.
I used to help my Dad sometimes - but I have to say I wasn't keen until we moved here and the garden "plants" were 6ft tall and I just HAD to tame it a bit (although it's 3/4 for the wildlife and a qtr for us!).
That certainly sounds idylic, Tigerhair. Have you got the whole island to yourself? No popping out to Tescos, I imagine - have to do a bit of rowing first.
he he - it's kind of an island (behind a factory) - so there is a road out... however, once in the house you don't know the factory is there. It used to run on water power (why it doesn't now, I don't know as the mill cut still runs under the factory)... the garden is fantastic. I have pictures under "tigerhair" on www.webshots.com if you wanna have a look... :)
I've just realised it's Margo (yes, I know it says so... I'm a bit slow today!!) - I thought I was a bloke in drag there, for a minute!!! Margo always looked so glam to me - can't you guys find a more flattering piccy!!! He he
I actually think that Margo should be the second least self sufficient, as she can cook - Jerry just rings out for currys, that he listens to his record player to and reads naughty mags! 8)
Hi Tigerhair and welcome. I had a look at your photos - it certainly looks idyllic - except when it floods! How often does that happen, and did your house get flooded too?
G'day Wombat - where are you in Aus? Spent a year there and LOVED it!
Magical powers, eh? Like waking people up in the middle of the night (still!)? Like being able to extract biscuits out of people with just a flash of a smile? That kind of thing?
Hi Tigerhair, looks and sounds like a great place of the world to live. I have a Mr 4 and he still wakes up through the night, little sister has always slept right through (thank goodness) kids love helping in the garden (somtimes have to go back to 'rescue' a plant that was carefully planted too deep).
