Greetings all

Post: # 8238Post Tigerhair »

:flower: Hi all, been browsing the site for a while and thought I'd pop in to say hello. Like gardening, but have only managed a few tomatos and courgettes over the years along with all those wasteful flowers - our house is on an island between a river and a mill cut - and is surrounded by trees on the banks (mostly Ash I think). It is a beautiful piece of paradise but virtually impossible to garden with all those tree roots and the floods! "Excuses, excuses" I hear you cry. We have a small person called Josh (who was 2 on Christmas day), four dogs and three cats, tropical and coldwater fish (remnants of a hobby).

Planning on doing a lot of gardening with Josh this year and helping a friend to plan her garden too. I would also like to do an RHS course but I'll have to save up for that! I work in a vets (valuable discount!!).

Look forward to chatting to you... :geek:

Happy days

Hello there Tigerhair and welcome. It certainly does sound like a little corner of paradise. Is it somewhere in the UK? or further afield.

My parents and my grandparents would both let me help them garden when I was a child. I think it is an amazing passtime to share and it really good to get kids interested from as early as possible.

Hi Andy
Thanks - and congrats on the great site. I have been a fan of the wonderful John Seymour for years (and want the updated version of his bible)... We live in Derbyshire - it's very beautiful. The annoying thing about the garden is worse because the soil here is SO good! Practically anything grows (esp. the weeds!) and it's moist too.
I used to help my Dad sometimes - but I have to say I wasn't keen until we moved here and the garden "plants" were 6ft tall and I just HAD to tame it a bit (although it's 3/4 for the wildlife and a qtr for us!).

That certainly sounds idylic, Tigerhair. Have you got the whole island to yourself? No popping out to Tescos, I imagine - have to do a bit of rowing first.

he he - it's kind of an island (behind a factory) - so there is a road out... however, once in the house you don't know the factory is there. It used to run on water power (why it doesn't now, I don't know as the mill cut still runs under the factory)... the garden is fantastic. I have pictures under "tigerhair" on www.webshots.com if you wanna have a look... :)

Happy New Year Tiger

I actually think that Margo should be the second least self sufficient, as she can cook - Jerry just rings out for currys, that he listens to his record player to and reads naughty mags! 8)

Hi Tigerhair and welcome. I had a look at your photos - it certainly looks idyllic - except when it floods! How often does that happen, and did your house get flooded too?

G'Day Tiger and Welcome to the site! The photos of your garden (and the rest) are great.

There is an old superstition that people born on the 25th of December can have magical powers...............

Just thought I'd mention it, anyway..........

G'day Wombat - where are you in Aus? Spent a year there and LOVED it!

Magical powers, eh? Like waking people up in the middle of the night (still!)? Like being able to extract biscuits out of people with just a flash of a smile? That kind of thing?

Where did you hear that? :)

G'Day tigerhair!

I live in Western Sydney, glad you liked the place, we do too!

I read about the magical power thing in a book many years ago, perhaps they meant the powers that you listed.........

I was based in Mt Eliza, about an hour from Melbourne. I travelled up the east coast right up to Cape Trib. Stunning country.

Hi Tigerhair, looks and sounds like a great place of the world to live. I have a Mr 4 and he still wakes up through the night, little sister has always slept right through (thank goodness) kids love helping in the garden (somtimes have to go back to 'rescue' a plant that was carefully planted too deep).
