Re: Starting seeds outside without a greenhouse

I've toyed with the idea of a cold frame and am thinking it might just help. Have a feeling moisture is my problem. Pots are either getting too dried out or soaked from the rain.

Starting seeds outside without a greenhouse

We moved to our current house at beginning of April and I started sowing seeds as soon as the dust settled. Our house is a barn conversion with only a slit window on the south side so I started my seeds outside in modules, pots and trays without a greenhouse. They are situated in a sheltered south f...

Re: No Dig Garden Method?

A very easy and cost effective way to do no-dig is by lasagna gardening. Basically you put down a layer of cardboard, followed by layers of organic material (straw, newspaper, shredded yard waste, manure, etc) topped with some compost and then mulch material. The idea is you're creating an amazing h...

Re: Chickens and gardens?

We have five chickens rotating in paddocks on our lawn, in theory their scratching/manuring/grazing should help improve the grass given time. The key seems to be not to keep them in one spot too long, or they will do real damage, and to allow the paddock to recover at least 3 weeks before having chi...

Re: how to sow chives?

I've done mine in modules, about 3 seeds per plug. Just starting to germinate after a couple of weeks. I'm planning on using them as a border amongst my strawberries.

Chickens - calcium and grit

Just another newbie question: my POL hens are given access to fresh grazing with areas of dirt and are fed organic layers mash. Will they still be needing extra grit and calcium? Or will their environment/food be enough? Thanks in advance.

Yarlington Fringe Festival

My little village of Yarlington is hosting "South Somerset's Premier Cultural event" next weekend, April 29 - May 1. We've only been here a fortnight so I cant vouch for how big or great this will be, but there is a varied schedule of events including a beer festival, wedding celebration ,...

Re: Mischievous hens

This must be an instinct since I make a sort of clucking noise when I have food, as well as rattling the same treat bowl. Already they're making the connection that this beast=good things! Particularly after their brekkie of yoghurt and old scones.

Peat vs No Peat

Seems to have been a string of news articles recently about the use of peat. Some gardening big wigs (Alan Titchmarsh) insist that peat is still necessary in certain circumstances. Most of the no peat group are of the younger sort, but its sad to see such influential gardeners fueling the continuing...

Re: Sowing seeds in 'plug' trays

What about beetroot? Recently saw Monty Don sowing beetroot in modules on GW, but always thought they were better straight in the ground?

Re: Mischievous hens

Thanks for the advice, we've made huge progress here. Two hens decided to take a look around the garden yesterday but I easily coaxed them back with some treats (high quaily bird seed). I kept their food and water inside the coop all day and by nightime they all went in willingly at dusk. Already fo...

Mischievous hens

Hi all, I am a first-time chicken owner with a few teething problems with one of my hens. I have 5 POL hybrids that I picked up yesterday afternoon. Straight off the bat Mavis, the troublesome chook, made an escape before putting her in the house. This morning all five of them got used to their new ...

Hi (again) from South Somerset

Hello all! I've introduced myself before a month or so ago when my family initially thought we were going to be settling down in Cornwall. Unfortunately things didn't work out there accommodation-wise and we had to give up the quarter acre allotment we thought we could get ourselves into. The good n...
