It pays to shop around...

Post: # 172896Post StripyPixieSocks »

A couple of nights ago an element in our oven stopped working so being in the precarious state of about to be moving possibly to a place with a cooker we didn't want to buy another one and my OH can't get one up the stairs at all due to being poorly still so Freecycle was out but we need an oven as we do most of our cooking in it and couldn't be without it for however long it takes the blinking agent to get back to us to tell us if we have or haven't got the cottage plus the four weeks notice we have to give here anyway!

So we looked online for the element as while getting the old one out it crumbled to dust in OH's hands... anyway we started looking and found a few at a reasonable price but then found on at £9.99 + £5.00 delivery.

We knew there were a few spares places around here so we decided to go check them out see if we could avoid the £5.00 delivery.

Well, we must have "please try to rip us off" tattooed in some kind of invisible to us ink on our foreheads because they rubbish most of them came out with is unbelievable!!!

Ok first up was £35 +VAT and he was doing us a favour...

The second guy told us that it wasn't a normal part so it would be expensive and told us he would have to order it in specially £35.00 +VAT

They both looked completely put out when we told them we could get the part online for £9.99... as they guy round the corner who owns a second hand white goods shop told us was a reasonable price so we already knew they weren't £35.00 and upwards!

Our cooker is a Tricity Viscount, there are hundreds of them and the elements are not in any way a 'special part'.

Talk about rip off Britain! So the online place got our custom after all but it really bugs me that this happens ALL the time here. I got a quote from Partco for a battery fro the car not so long ago for £45... the guy down the road tried to tell me they were 'special parts' and told me it would be £175!!! :banghead:

I mean... is it just London or does this happen to everyone everywhere?!

I think it's probably worse in London, or cities, but it can be pretty bad anywhere.

We eventually stopped going to any of the big chain car places - kwikfit, national tyres etc. I didn't seem to be able to get out of them without spending £200 - it felt like some sort of policy on their part. The little guy down the road was much better and cheaper.

I had the same problem with car parts. I had to get a motor for a rear windscreen wiper and 3 garages tried to charge me £50+ just for the motor!! I bought it off ebay, picked it up myself (cheaper than the postage) and installed it myself with the help of a petrol head friend and lot of looking online.

On the up side I have now found a lovely family owned garge who looks after my little skoda like it was their own!!

So def agree! It pays to shop around!!!

The above link proved invaluable to me. Our car is a necessary evil that has keys in one bit, diesel in an other & if it doesn't go, I wouldn't have a clue what's wrong!

Having said that our local garage is run by a lovely bloke that I trust totally.
