I've started a blanket...

Post: # 180903Post StripyPixieSocks »

I've never gotten the hang of crochet but recently wanted to have another go so tried over several nights to learn to make a granny square.

Several evenings later (much searing and throwing of crochet hooks lol) I finally managed it with the help of a video on YouTube.

Well... as it's cold lately and probably likely to be colder in the new house until we get to grips with the heating and what not I decided (I must be insane) to make a huge snuggly blanket for sitting on the sofa with OH so I broke out my stash and got to work.

I'm making a huge 63 square monster of a blanket in pastel colours and each square is 10 x 10"

Anyway, so far so good, I used up all the pale blue yarn and am now onto the pink yarn and boy is my hand aching... 8 full squares and another square which is one row short of full size (must remember to put pale blue yarn on the shopping list) in 3 days... actually my right hand is swollen up tonight :(

I've never pulled of something this huge before so it's going to be my main, pet project for... well... probably months!

If I don't post for a while I will be trapped under an avalanche of granny squares... please send help LOL!

Apart from a funky hand I'm feeling pleased with myself

SPS,

that does do seem like a huge project. The good thing about crocheting is the goes quickly. However, I have never done anything close to that big---so best of luck to you and keep us posted. I am sure the final result will make the effort worthwhile.

Will you be joining the squares as you go? This is pretty easy to do, and will save you tonnes of time as there will be no making up at the end.

Attic24 has a really good tutorial on her sidebar which I'm sure is called Joining granny squares as you go, it's deffo worth a look!

I'm well impressed. I think I may be the world's slowest knitter so I'm wondering if crochet is any quicker?

Looking forward to seeing the end product lol. I am rubbish at crochet and knitting, my gran tried eternally to teach, she was one of those lucky people that could do them while watching the tv and talking at the same time. Wish I could, take my hat off to you :salute:

good luck with it!

ive had something similar on the go for a while, using all my odd balls so its a bit of a mad mish mash of colours! its slowly growing as i finish off various projects and crochet the half balls in to granny squares, i have blanket approx 6x 6 squares and each square is 6 inches or so!

knitting another too using a really cool short row pattern that makes a lovely wavey pattern it looks even better with the multi-coloured yarn im using !

Hee hee thanks

I'm making the squares up individually and putting them together later as I haven't got all the colours I want just yet.

Giving it a rest today as my hand is really sore and I've got a book to finish reading.

I wish I had learned to crochet first as it comes together far more quickly than knitting, I just wish I'd taken more notice when my Nan tried to teach me to knit, crochet and sew instead of following my granddad around and learning joinery lol

I bet she's laughing at me now and rubbing her hands together saying "I told you so"

I made a granny squares blanket last winter but made the mistake of doing small 6cm x 6cm squares. Started it in November - finished in February.

It was lovely to sit in front of the fire making a few squares each evening and really cosy to snuggle under once I started to make it up - simple pleasures, eh? The only down side was that I developed a friction burn (which soon toughened up to a callous) on my right index finger!

Once my daughter saw it, she wanted one as well but I made hers in much larger squares. Hope you enjoy making yours SPS!

Fab, Mrs M, I love the colours!

My mum made something like that back in the 1960s!

That looks fab Mrs M I love the colours against the black, looks like a stained glass window.

We haven't got a TV so we're rigging up a PC screen downstairs in the new place so we can watch films in front of the little multi fuel fire that's there and we can snuggle up on the sofa under the blanket... hopefully this winter!

SPS you are very clever. Your squares are really pretty and I'm sure the finished blanket will be very beautiful and very snuggly! Mrs M that is such a lovely blanket! Learning to crochet is my next project. I can make a chain and apparently that's the main bit - according to some the rest is easy!  All I have to do now is find someone to teach me! Then I may be able to create something as beautiful as you ladies have!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

I never got further than making a chain either and could never get my head around crochet - my mum was a knitter so that is what I became!
