Re: The £12.78 Egg
Not much of a slow down as yet - I keep making dire predictions involving number of hours of daylight required per egg. However our three chooks are still relative babies (ie POL at the end of September). Although I still reckon given my OH's propensity for insisting that the poor girls are starving...

Re: "Natural"diet for cats?
Your biggest problem is going to be convincing the kitty to give up dried food. That stuff is seriously addictive, because of the carbs - think of an office full of women and a plate of biscuits  (assuming it's not diet morning) You better not try and take them away. We have switched our cats ...

Salad - Little holes for ventilation?
Well, they're probably not, but I'm stumped. My first attempt at salad (in a raised bed). We've been eating baby leaves of sorrel, spinach and mixed salad leaves, together with pea shoots for the past few weeks. Very nice Last Friday they were fine, then we had three baking hot days. Now the speedy ...

Re: the results of my cat poo studies...
Thank you for this - I was having a problem with my (non existent) spring onions in the raised bed.
I realised that one of the sneaky felines was very tidily raking it all flat afterwards.
I've opted for the bits of wire fencing now (on my third lot of seeds) and am optimistic.

Re: Pea'd off!!
You could try tasting one of the side shoots - edible pea shoots taste fresh and vaguely pea flavoured, sweet pea shoots taste yukky. (I was nipping off the tops of my dwarf sweet peas and ... well, you can guess the rest.) I'm still here, so obviously not toxic, but don't take a big bite :pukeright:...

Re: Help needed with snail and slug control please!
Also read (same article, apologies to whoever it was for not crediting them) that the options that cut the slugs (diatomataceous earth, etc) work slowly, so the slugs have time to have a family - INSIDE THE BARRIER.

Re: Help needed with snail and slug control please!
I have read that fresh ground coffee (the cheaper the better, but sadly you can't use it first) works. Apparently it doesn't harm other insects, but you might find them gathered round the plant on Sunday mornings, reading the papers. It certainly kills the blighters (we tested in on a particularly n...

Re: Pea problem
We don't seem to be troubled by mice (it'll be the cats) and have lots and lots of yummy pea shoots per the "Edible Garden" (27p a packet from Asda) The really annoying thing is that the pea shoots for noshing are way, way healthier than my spindly pathetic mange tout. Ho hum. I'm seriousl...

Re: What size do I knit?
You can always turn it up (keeps your ears warmer). I know what you mean about the sewing up. I've got rolls of blanket knitted (basically as wide as I can get on my needles) and keep putting off the sewing bit. So I currently have three very, very warm scarves. Some of the posts reminded me of the ...

Hello from West Yorkshire
:flower: Hello. Just starting out on the whole growing my own thing - successful crop of cherry tomaties last year doesn't really count. Not a lot of ground, so I'm going to have to be inventive! Following in the footsteps of Tom, I removed all the gravel and paving from the front garden last autumn...
