cleaning stainless steel

Can anybody help with ideas for cleaning an old stainless steel worktop, it is approx 5' X 2' (sorry don't do metric). it has been stood in a cellar for quilte a while and is covered in allsorts, including paint. Hi Archie, I don't know if the pebbles being black helps, I just worked on the theory that matt black absorbes heat better, but being in an enclosed box does it really matter?
The truth is I had a load of small black pebbles.
